Military leaders across Southern California were prepping for a shutdown. Thousands of civilians help run operations at area bases and work in administrative and maintenance jobs. Active-duty families rely on base services for day-to-day life as well as benefits. Nearly 80,000 retired veterans live within 50 miles of Camp Pendleton and use the base for their grocery shopping, benefit services and medical care.
