This version is similar to the version.The body that regulates UK broadcasting has launched an investigation into whether the BBC has been misleading consumers about the amount of airtime the channel spends on women.
The Audience Council for Radio has launched an investigation into whether the BBC’s Radio 4 lunchtime show Woman’s Hour – which has been given the same timeslot for years – has been unfairly promoting the programme on the basis that it has equal amounts of airtime for both men and women.
The council, which represents advertising agencies and companies that pay to air ads on radio, said it had become aware of a “widely publicised report which has questioned the accuracy” of the claim.
It said: “The Radio 4 Today programme, which is carried by BBC Radio 4, has been given the same time slot on weekdays from 10am to 11.30am for at least the past five years. However, in a recent article for The Daily Telegraph, the programme’s host, John Humphrys, claimed that Woman’s Hour ‘had 60% of its shows, and that’s fairly typical of radio’, while Radio 4 had a ‘minute or two’ of Woman’s Hour per week.”
It added: “The council has asked the BBC to confirm the accuracy of the assertion that Woman’s Hour has the same amount of airtime for both men and women.”
A BBC spokesperson said: “We have responded to the Audience Council in accordance with our long-standing procedure. In this instance the issue relates to the presentation of data for a one-minute weekly period, in reference to an interview conducted by John Humphrys in which he discussed the proportion of programming carried by Radio 4.
“The programme has equal airtime for both men and women in the same one minute interval. We do not comment on editorial matters. be359ba680
